ESL introduces third-place matches in their tournaments

Time: 2025-07-01 14:45 (UTC)

Tournament organizer ESL has announced a significant change to the structure of their competitions. Starting with the 22nd season of the ESL Pro League, which kicks off on September 27 with the first stage, all Tier 1 and Wildcard tournaments will include third-place matches.

New additions to the schedule
ESL has confirmed that the new rules will apply to already announced events: ESL Pro League Season 22, IEM Chengdu 2025, and IEM Kraków 2026. These tournaments will receive updates, including best-of-three bronze medal matches, which will be held before the grand final on suNday . This will replace the traditional exhibition matches, increasing the competitive intrigue. The changes are related to the evolution of the competitive environment, where points in the Valve Regional Standings are key to invitations to the Major. ESL noted that such matches meet modern requirements and stimulate the fight for every place.

Updated Awards
The prize pools for the tournaments have been revised to reflect the new format. Winners will receive substantial bonuses, with special attention given to teams that finish in 3rd place, with additional club rewards. The total prize pool for each competition will reach $1,000,000, with a distribution that will motivate the fight until the last round.

Impact on Viewers
Now fans, both online and live, will be able to watch two decisive matches on suNday , adding momentum to the final day. This decision is in line with PGL's practice, which already introduced similar games in early 2025, reflecting the trend towards strengthening the competitive spirit.
