New Measures Against Smurfing and Boosting in League of Legends

Time: 2025-08-11 15:45 (UTC)

Riot Games, in the latest Dev Update for League of Legends, announced the expansion of tools to combat unfair play, including smurfing, boosting, and account sharing. The developers plan to implement some changes with patch 25.18, while testing of the True Skill 2 system will continue until the end of the year.

Strengthening Sanctions in 2025
In 2025, Riot had already introduced several measures to improve match quality. In patch 25.6, the anti-cheat system Vanguard began automatically compensating LP to players whose matches were ruined by offenders. In version 25.9, updated algorithms for detecting griefing and intentional gameplay in favor of opponents increased the daily ban count tenfold.

Patch 25.18 will add sanctions for boosting, aiding cheaters, and using bots. A new category of complaints—"Rating Manipulation"—will be available in the client, allowing players to report suspicious situations. Confirmed violations will be penalized, and affected players will receive LP compensation.

Measures Against Smurfing
A separate set of measures is aimed at combating smurfing. In the coming weeks, Riot will restrict smurfs' access to matches with less experienced opponents. Simultaneously, testing of True Skill 2—a new system that allows for three times faster determination of a player's actual skill level and matching with equal opponents—is underway.

By the end of 2025, Riot plans to implement additional tools to protect honest players, streamers, and esports athletes from targeted griefing. Details on the development of True Skill 2 and new measures will be presented in the October edition of Dev Update.
