General Manager of Complexity criticizes Perfect World for repeated changes to CS Asia Championships 2025 slots

Time: 2025-08-11 12:43 (UTC)

Complexity general manager Graham “messioso” Pitt has publicly criticized the organizers of the CS Asia Championships 2025, Perfect World, for repeatedly changing the tournament slot distribution without updating the invitation dates in accordance with Valve Regional Standings (VRS).

This is the second time that the “Additional Information” has been changed since the April announcement of the tournament, which will take place in Shanghai.

The latest edit has radically changed the balance of slots: China has lost both qualifying spots, one of which was given to Brazilian team MIBR as the tenth and final direct invitation, while the other was added to the Asian qualifier with four subregions — China, East Asia, Oceania, and “other regions.”

Sharp criticism from Complexity
Pitt stated in his post on X that the tournament operator's actions are “completely illogical” and set a dangerous precedent:

This makes absolutely no sense — how can a TO continually make changes to their slot allocation without being required to change their VRS date? Surely after their first infringement, the only two options were to:
- revert the slot allocation back to how it was initially
- use the updated slot allocation but on the August VRS, not July

With more slot changes, they should now be on the September VRS...
Your complete inaction is concerning. The precedent being set is even more so.
Graham “messioso” Pitt

Complexity emphasizes that the VRS date determines which teams will receive direct invitations, so changing the slot allocation without changing the date may give an advantage to those who were higher in the older version of the ranking, even if they are no longer among the leaders in the current ranking.

Conflict with Valve rules
According to Valve's Tournament Operating Requirements, there is a clear rule for Tier 2 tournaments: the date of the announcement of invitations must be at least 30 days after the publication of “Additional Information.”

Perfect World, by changing the slot distribution in August but leaving the July VRS date, effectively circumvented this requirement.

This is the second time in a year that Perfect World has taken such steps. Earlier, during the first update, the company added FaZe Clan to the list — a team that was not eligible to participate due to its VRS rating but received a slot thanks to an exemption from Valve as a former CAC champion.

The CS Asia Championships 2025 will take place from October 14 to 19 in Shanghai. The prize pool will be $1,000,000, of which $400,000 will go directly to the teams and $600,000 to the organizations.

The discussion around CAC 2025 is only gaining momentum, and now many are waiting for a response from Valve, which officially approves all exemptions and rules for tournaments.
